Most visitors to Athens, Greece want to visit the historic sites of the city including the Acropolis, the Greek Parliament and the National Gardens. These can all be easily reached by traveling to the city center or Monastiraki. The Zappeion Exhibition Hall and the Temple of Olympian Zeus can also be easily reached from here. Dionysiou Areopagitou Street is a popular pedestrian street and visitors will walk this street when visiting the Ancient Theater of Dionyssus. At the Acropolis Propylea, the views of Athens are panoramic and worth the trip. While sightseeing further from the city center, the Athens metro will easily draw the most visitors.
While at Monastiraki, many visitors go to shop at the flea market. Sundays are the big day for the flea market and street vendors, with the better items, are closer to the center. If you plan on getting breakfast before shopping, get there early because it is very popular. All types of items can be bought, including many items from refugees from other European countries. The Laiki markets are like farmers' markets in the U.S., where all types of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables are sold, including fresh olives and olive oil. These markets travel around Athens on different days of the week, but the main city market is in the city center everyday except Sunday.
Athens has more 148 theaters, more than any other city, including the ancient Herodes Atticus Theatre. The Athens Festival is held here and hosts visitors from May to October. Many open air performances can be seen in the various theaters as well as world-class artists who come to Athens to perform.
