The Greek Orthodox Church is a combination of seven separate churches including the Great Church of Christ in Constantinople, the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch, the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem, the Orthodox Church of Greece, the Orthodox Church of Cyprus and the Orthodox Church of Mount Sinai. All these churches are rich in their own history individually as well as in the history of the Greek Orthodox Church as a whole.
There are two different divisions in the US, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Russian Orthodox Church in America. The Greek Orthodox Church is the strictest of the Catholic churches, with the most restrictions. This is a sin and absolution-based religion that includes the concept of original sin. With sins and mortal sins, the Church requires its congregations to confess of their sins and complete certain punishments that are metered out by their priests. Each sin of course has its own punishment depending on the level of severity. Mortal sins are the worst and require confession and repentance before death. The ultimate price is eternity in Hell, according to the Church’s teachings.
The Geek Orthodox Church is also the strictest regarding marriage and divorce in the Church. Members that are married in the Church are considered married for life. The only possible way to get married in the church after a divorce is only if that divorce is called an annulment; because annulment deems that you were never married, it is the only divorce decree that the church will allow.
