The Differences between Greek and Roman Architecture

Greek and Roman architecture are quite often lumped into the same category when discussing architectural styles, but there are some distinct differences. Greek architecture developed around the seventh century BC, and focused almost entirely on the outer aesthetic appeal of the building. The architectural characteristics were created in order to please the Greek gods, who were thought to only see the outside, and the indoor spaces the buildings created were fairly plain. Greek architecture stressed the column, with posts along the top to support the roof. Most of the architecture developed by ancient Greeks was solely for religious decoration.

Roman architecture began as an adaptation of Greek architecture. Roman architecture, however, evolved with the technology of the times and incorporated a lot of new discoveries into the buildings. They also modified the architecture to focus equally on the inside and outside beauty. Since the architecture was used for many different types of buildings, the style changed quite a bit. Roman religious buildings were very similar to the Greek temples, but public buildings had to be built with a more utilitarian view. As the Romans developed arches and domes, the new technologies became part of the buildings. This is why the arch is a big part of Roman architectural styles.

Since Roman architecture found its base in the Greek styles, many people think of them as the same. Roman architecture, like aqueducts and the Colosseum, is much more abundant and widespread because of the extent of the Roman empire. However, if something is referred to as “Greek” architecture, it is different from the more popular, technologically advanced style the Romans developed.
