The Acropolis

The Acropolis, which means upper city, is at the very top of Athens Greece. The word acropolis is actually used to describe many cities in Greece, but the Acropolis in Athens is most popular of all of them.

The Acropolis of Athens is basically a flat topped rocked hill. This hill is surrounded by many structures that include ancient theaters, statues, temples, and other various support buildings for the city. The structure that most people go to see at the Acropolis is the Parthenon. The Parthenon is a Greek temple that was built for the goddess Athena. The name Parthenon is derived from a Greek word meaning virgin, which the goddess Athena was said to be.

The Erecthion is another sacred site on the Acropolis. The battle between Athena and Poseidon was thought to take place at this spot. The victor of the battle would be the patron of the city. In the mythological battle, the two gods battled by showing off their powers. Poseidon struck his trident into the wall, causing a spring to pop up. Athena thrust her spear into the ground, and an olive tree grew. Athena was the victor of the battle, and the city was named Athens.

The Acropolis is also the home of the Theater of Herod Atticus. This site was built in 161 AD by the Romans. It was used for performances that high Roman culture would enjoy. Today, the Acropolis is a major tourist attraction that people from all over the world come to see. The Theater of Herod Atticus is still used today for ballet performances, Yanni, and theater.
