Corfu, also known as Kerkyra, is a beautiful Greek Island with clear blue waters and wonderful natural beauties. Corfu sits in the Ionian Sea and is near the coast of Albania. Corfu houses the Ionian University. Corfu is deeply seated in ancient Greek Mythology, having connections to Poseidon, Asopos, Korkyra, and Metope. Corfu has seen many battles and conquests and became part of Greece in the year 1864. The island has castles that reflect these battles from their strategic locations. The capital of Corfu itself is surrounded by two of these castles.
Because of these castles and where they are placed in 2007, the government of Greece declared the capital of Corfu to be a Castle city or Kastropolis. The old town of Corfu is paved in cobblestones that are meant for walking around the city because many of them are too narrow for vehicle traffic. The island has an old citadel left over from the Venetians and a natural obelisk that was used for guarding the island, with the old military post still on top.
Corfu has several museums and many architectural wonders and is a beautiful place to visit. The island can be reached by car and ferry, seaplane, and airplane. With fabulous grapes and wine the dining in Corfu is something to experience. The island has eight towns and villages to explore. One of the largest celebrations in Corfu is on Easter, with all day music and the celebration of the “Early Resurrection.” The residents decorate the balconies of their homes with rid cloth and break clay pots full of water on the street.
