Crete in Greece

Crete is an island and one of the Greek peripheries. It plays a huge part in the economic and cultural history of Greece. Although the people of Crete refer to themselves as Greeks, they also maintain their own local customs and traits.

There are a number of historic sites tourists to visit on Crete. The climate in Crete is a Mediterranean one with hot, dry summers and mild winters. It makes for wonderful sightseeing when the weather is so beautiful. You will experience almost no rain if you visit in summertime while December and January can be quite wet.
Crete was a center of culture and civilization back in the Minoan era. Crete was involved in the Mithridatic Wars and was ultimately conquered by Rome. The island changed hands many times before finally becoming part of Greece.

A visit to Chanta is a wonderful experience. The city, which has a population of 60,000, still retains its small town atmosphere and charm. Narrow streets, interesting shops and beautiful flower gardens can be seen just about anywhere in this charming city.

Heraklion is the capital of Crete. It provides the tourist all the amenities possible as well as numerous historical sites and ruins in close proximity to the city itself. There are also a good many archaeological sites close by as well. One of the loveliest cities in Crete is Rethymno. It is divided into old town and new town, but both are equally beautiful with cobblestone streets and alleys, quaint shops and beautiful scenery.

If you are looking to visit a place rich in history and rich in scenery, Crete should go to the top of your list. It truly a beautiful, historic and interesting place to see.
