If you have never been to Greece, you need to put it on your list of places to visit before you pass away. The Acropolis is one of the fabulous wonders on this earth that still mystifies anyone.
The Acropolis is located in the center of Athens, Greece and may be classified as an ancient ruin, yet it really is not in ruins like one would expect. Even though there is refurbishing being done on parts of this ancient piece of culture, it is still awed by architectural designers of today as to how perfectly it is constructed. The simple fact that the people of 5th century BC were able to build such a massive monument with so little work is astonishing.
The Acropolis started as the center marketplace of Greece, becoming a sacred shrine for worship later. It is still respected and awed by everyone who graces it’s presence to this day. This structure has lasted through many centuries, although being partially destroyed by the religious enemies of the time. Yet, the Acropolis has withstood the weather erosion and still majestically reigns over the city for all to see.
There are actually 21 different structures and sites to see within the Acropolis, with the more popular and largest ones being the Parthenon, Old Temple of Athena, Erechtheum, and the statue of Athena, Promachos.
Since the Acropolis was attacked over the centuries, there have been a couple different sets of walls built around the area, most of which still stand today. The Acropolis is visited by so many tourists that access to the mountain area is pretty much consists of wide walking paths to make the trek easier.
