In the Greek culture, it is easy to understand the importance of dance if you understand the culture’s history and religious background. Folk dance is the primary form of dance style that is practiced in Greece. Although, the Greeks have held true to the traditional styles of dance. They have integrated modern styles into their dances, but the primary style and practice has not changed for over a century. In the Greek tradition, dance was, and still is, used for the expression of nearly everything. From poetry to song, from language to emotion, dance has been used to express it all.
Greek dance is a major component of the culture and lives of the people. It is the one constant form of expression. It is said by the people of the land that without dance they would not be able to communicate. It is often compared to the sign language for the deaf. Without dance, they would find it almost impossible to communicate. There are a number of forms of dance in the Greek culture, but one remains the constant traditional style and is by far the most popular of all the dances. Although centuries old, the traditional folk dance style remains roughly the same today as it was thousands of years ago.
Greek dance is forecasted to continue to be an uncorrupted style of dance, to continue on in the culture to be as important and prominent today as it was before. The children learn to dance even before they can walk, and continue to learn the more intricate steps as time goes by. Though some tradition is lost from one generation to another, dance and its importance in this culture has not been lost.
