Islands of Greece

Greece is made up of both a country in Southern Europe on the Mediterranean and a large group of islands in both the Aegean and Ionian Seas. There are thousands of Greek islands, although only about 14% of them are inhabited. With this many islands to choose from, there is no question why millions of people are drawn to the Greek Islands every year for vacations.

The islands are divided into different groupings according to their location to the mainland. The Ionain group of islands is located off the west coast of Greece. The Aegeon and Sporades group of islands are located off the east coast of Greece. The Saronic, Cyclades, and Dodecanese groups are all located south of the mainland. Crete is the largest of all the islands and the most famous. Crete has everything all the other islands offer, such as mountains, beautiful beaches, and rocky coves. Crete offers urban cities with popular nightlife as well as quaint towns and villages. Crete was home to the Minoan Civilization from 2600 to 1400 BC, and provides many ancient sites that are tourist destinations for those interested in ancient history. Crete has maintained its own indigenous language, dance and music, and wine. With three airports, two of which are international, Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Over two million tourists visited Crete last year alone, and this number is steadily climbing.
