Greek Style of Dance

Dance is a very ancient and functional tradition among the people of Greece and its surrounding islands. Some of the styles have been mentioned over the course of history by Plato and in Homer’s Illiad.

There are over 4,000 traditional dances that have been adapted throughout the regions of the Greek world. Each region has its own style to fit their ways and environment. There are styles that are adapted by the islanders and styles for the communities of the mainland. When communities intermix, even more different dances can and have been created.

Greek folk dancing is a very functional part of life in Greece today. It is used when people gather to celebrate different occasions. These occasions can include baptisms, weddings, wedding preparations or just family gatherings. Dance is also a big part of holiday celebrations and festivals. It is very popular in Greek taverns and homes with or without music.

Most dances are performed in an open circle and are usually led by men. The dancers are joined by holding shoulders or hands. Usually, the musician is in the middle. The leader picks the song, pays the musician and reserves the right to add his own variations to the steps. Other dances can be done by couples face to face and there can be other formations.

Greeks are very proud of their culture and traditions. In each community, local dances are preserved, older dances are being rediscovered and newer dances are added as their culture continues to evolve.
