Islands of Greece

Greece is a country in Southern Europe. Surrounding it are the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Greece has a mainland, but also consists of many islands. Lots of people travel to Greece for the holidays or for vacation because of the number of islands. It has over 1400 islands throughout the two seas, each of which is different and unique. The most popular islands are Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Corfu, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Alonissos, Skiathos, Crete, Rhodes and many more.

One of the islands is Aegina. It is the closet island to the capital. You can take a ferry there from Athens and get there in about an hour. This island is known for its colorful pistachios and ceramics. It also offers sandy beaches, fishing villages and more. You can enjoy fresh fish and yummy appetizers. The Temple of Aphaia is also worth a visit.

The Dodecanese Islands is a group consisting of twelve islands. Some of them are located right along Turkey. They contain whitewashed houses, beaches, crystal waters, nightlife and more. Patmos, often called the “The Jerusalem of the Aegean,” is also located in this group of islands. It has several mountains and rocky soil.

The Ionian Islands are also a part of Greece. These islands are on the western side of the country. The island of Ithaki is one of the most beautiful islands of the Ionian Islands. This island is known as the home of Odysseus, the protagonist of The Odyssey by Homer.
