Greece is in southern Europe, and is the most southern country on the Balkan Peninsula. The Aegean Sea borders the country on the east; on the west is the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea is on its southern border. The size of the country can be compared to the United States’ Alabama.
History indicates there was human life in what is now called Greece as early as 120,000 BC though it wasn’t until approximately 7,000 & 3,000 BC that civilization abounded. During the period from 3,000 to 1,100 BC, known as the Bronze Age, cities were established. Remains of settlements and burial chambers have been found on the mainland of Greece as well as the islands, such as Crete, in and around Greece. Crete appears to have been one of the earliest civilizations to be established. The people there, known as the Minoans, developed a form of writing, and began trade with neighboring islands. The island was rich in natural resources. Their culture and influence spread to mainland Greece as well as nearby islands. However, due to a volcanic eruption which devastated the island of Crete, the Mycenaeans, who were from the mainland of Greece, saw an opportunity through warfare to expand their culture. This began a long period of changing civilizations from the Dark Ages, Ancient Greece, and the conquering of Greece by the Romans. Battles were fought in the country and Christianity spread. The Byzantine Empire ruled Greece for a thousand years until 1204 when conquerors divided the country and it became part of the Ottoman Empire. It was not until 1830, after a bitter war, that Greece became independent from Turkish rule.
So many battles were fought and Greece divided as part of the spoils of war, that the country as it is seen today was not a reality until 1948 when the last of the islands became a part of Greece.
