Corfu is the second largest island in the Greece Ionian Islands and home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Corfu has long been a favorite destination spot for Greeks and other travelers from all over the world. It has an abundant variety of resorts, bars, shopping opportunities, and nightlife.
Starting with the white, sandy beaches, Corfu has a wide variety to choose from. Agios Georgios is a beautiful secluded section of beach far from the nearest village. Agios Gordis is popular for its rugged rock formations. Myrtiotissa is an unofficial nudist beach, named after a beautiful monastery located just above it. Ermones is located at the bottom of a steep rock face, with a cable car available to take hotel residents to and from the beach.
Corfu is also the name of the capital city of the island. As one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in all of Greece, Corfu has maintained its multi-cultural influences through the ages. Corfu was built between two fortresses during the Venetian rule of the islands. The architecture shows influences of French, Sicilians, British, and Venetian cultures, who all inhabited the city at one time or another.
Rich with monuments, Corfu is home to The Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George. The Palace has been restored to its original Georgian styled beauty after it was destroyed in 1943, during the Italian raids. The Liston building, built during the French occupation, is home to some of the most elegant cafes and restaurants on the island. With all that Corfu has to offer, it’s no wonder that locals and tourists alike have made it a popular destination spot.
