Mykonos Island in Greece

Mykonos is a Greek island which is a popular tourist attraction, as well as a great cosmopolitan location. The island is part of the Cyclades, and lies between four islands: Tinos, Siros, Paros, and Naxos. The island, which covers only 41 square miles, is made mostly of granite, and relies on the desalination of sea water to obtain fresh water. There are over 9,320 people living on Mykonos, and most live in its largest town known as Chora.

The original people to settle on Mykonos were the Ionians in the 11th century BC. In Greek mythology, Mykonos is where Zeus and Gigantes battled, and the island was named for the grandson of Apollo, Mykons. Mykonos is very popular with international celebrities, with a few having summer residences there. Mykonos is very well known for its nightlife. With famous clubs, beach bars, and gay-friendly resorts, there is something for everyone. Landmarks include: windmills, Little Venice, Paraportiani, Archaeological Museum, Aegean Maritime Museum, and Delos.

With little white houses with flowers and blue windows, Mykonos is beautiful and unique. Other characteristics include: hand-painted streets, windmills, pigeon keepers, chimneys, lots of little churches, and great restaurants and cafes. Mykonos is a summer haven for mostly gay men, but also the rich and famous, which unfortunately is reflected in the prices in the cafes. The island of Mykonos started out very poor, but it started to boom in the 1950s, and has become very rich in recent years due to its popularity among the rich and famous.
