Modern day Athens is a growing metropolis, an industrial city of about 3.37 million people, according to a count that was taken from a census done in the year 2005. Since then, the population has continued to grow and expand. It is a city that is the center of economical, financial and industrial growth in the country of Greece. It is a city rich in cultural pursuits such as art, concert halls, and museums. There are over 50 museums in Athens, including an archaeological museum, and houses more masterpieces of ancient art than any other museum in the world. Another interesting fact about Athens is that it is considered to be the cradle of Western civilization, that gave birth to democracy.
Athens was named after the mythological goddess Ethena, the goddess of wisdom. Athens hosted the first modern day Olympic Games in 1896. In 2004, the Olympic Games were once again hosted there. Growth in the city has seen a new facelift for Athens's older buildings since hosting the Olympics. Not only making improvements in its buildings, it also has been upgrading the parks and landscaping different areas, such as the beautiful National Gardens of Athens, considered Athens's greatest treasure, as it is a virtual paradise located right in the center of Athens.
Athens is rich in culture and has tourists from every walk of life. The city offers its visitors a wide assortment of things to do. There is shopping galore, museums, cultural arts, concert halls, beautiful sandy beaches, and a never-ending night life for the young and old alike.
