History of the Acropolis

The Acropolis is a flat-topped rock, located in Athens, Greece, which rises 490 feet above sea level. It is best known as the Acropolis of Athens, but is also sometimes called the “Sacred Rock” of Athens. It was first inhabited in the Neolithic era.

There are several important monuments on the Acropolis, the most notable of which is The Parthenon. It is one of the most famous monuments of the Ancient Greek civilization and is reputed to have been built between 447 and 438 BC. It still remains as Greece's international symbol. Another monument, called The Erechtheion, was built in the Ionic Order. The main temple was divided into two sections, both dedicated to the worship of the two principal gods of Attica, Athena and Poseidon-Erechtheses. The Temple of Athena Nike was also built during the Ionic Order in 420 BC. It was built with a row of four columns in the front of each of its narrow sides. The Propylaea is considered to be the monumental gateway of the Acropolis and was constructed in 437-432 BC. To the south of the entrance is the tiny Temple of Athena Nike. A bronze statue of Athena is believed to have originally stood at its center.

If you are really interested in history, the Acropolis would be a great place to visit. There is plenty of history to explore. Even if you do not have a large interest in Greek history, the wonderment created by these ancient and beautiful structures should be enough to leave you impressed.
