When traveling to the Greek islands it is recommended that you go in May, June, September or October. These are the off-season dates while the weather is still nice, but you will miss the biggest crowds. May and June are the blooming seasons so there are more flowers at this time. The water temperature of the sea is cooler, but you can still enjoy a dip.
There are so many islands that it's almost impossible to see it all on one trip. They are divided into groups. The Cyclades Islands consist of seventeen islands. The Northern Aegean Islands are made up of seven islands. There are six Saronic Islands and four Sporades Islands. The Dodecanese Island chain consists of thirteen islands. The Ionian Islands contain seven islands. In addition, there are four other individual islands.
One of the favorite islands to visit and by some considered “the most beautiful of them all,” is Crete. The other recommended islands are Mykonos, Tinos, Antiparos, Anafi, patmos and Paros. If you rent a car, you can check out the island and find quaint villages and quiet beaches.
The least crowded islands to visit are Donoussa, Gavdos and Anafi. In addtion to Crete's beauty, there are charming little villages to visit. Being the biggest of all the islands, there is an endless variety of activities. There is a busy nightlife, museums and gorgeous beaches.
Andros, Lesbos and Crete are very green as well as mountainous. Cyclades is “brown and dry with oases dotted around it.” The old town in Rhodes has a medieval walled city and a castle built by the knights of Saint John. It is more crowded but you can still find beaches with plenty of room for your entire party. Santorini is the best for shopping.
