The island of Mykonos is part of the Cyclades. The Cyclades are a group of of about 220 Greek islands. Of the many popular tourist destinations of Greece, the island of Mykonos is high up on the list. Even with only the two villages making up this fashionable area, it has still become well known for its sophisticated character and explosive nightlife.
The smaller, and one of the oldest towns of Mykonos is Ano Mera. This is the more quiet area of the island where most of the locals go about their daily business. Near this little village is where you can find the monastery of Panagia Tourliani. Found in the courtyard is a bell-tower and marble fountain.
Mykonos Town is the largest of the two villages. This town has been said to be one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades. The architectural style reflects the traditional Cycladic beauty. The buildings are bright white and adorned with purple vine shrubberies. The brilliant stone labyrinth-style alleys run through the village and make for peaceful walks come morning. Lining these are a number of cafes, boutiques, souvenir and fine jewelery shops. Additionally, there are many clubs to be visited once night falls. Sites and landmarks that should not be missed include the famous windmills that still stand from the sixteenth century, these have become a trademark for Mykonos.
It is not surprising that this island would draw many artists to capture its beauty. If traveling to Mykonos, be sure not to miss visiting the beautiful Little Venice. You can also watch out for the little bird who has become Mykonos' official mascot. Petros the Pelican has been hanging out at the town's waterfront for over fifty years!
