Greece has become one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Among the most famous destinations not to be missed while touring Greece is the island of Crete. It is here that you can find many ancient historical sites such as the Venetian old city, the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the Samaria Gorge, and the Venetian castle at Rethymno.
Crete is the largest of the islands of Greece and consists of four major prefectures. These are Chania, Rethimnon, Iraklion and Lassithi. Chania is the largest of these cities with a population of 60,000. Chania remains authentic with its traditional houses, narrow alleys, and flourishing gardens. Heraklion, being Crete's capital, is the economic center and largely urban. Lassithi is the suburbia of Crete. This town has a large range of tourist activities with many archaeological sites to see. From the ancient mythology, this is Zeus' place of birth. Lastly is the city of Rethymno, which is divided into Old Town and New Town. Old Town still remains with its old buildings and stone paved alleys with a breathtaking Venetian fortress overlooking the city.
Crete is a weighty part of Greece's economical and cultural legacy. Many flourishing hotels and resorts can be found at the south point of the island. Crete values its own native traditions. The locals are proud of their Cretan origin and speak their own dialect, which is different from the rest of Greece. Cretans are well known for their fruit and vegetable production as well as their fantastic hospitality!
