Modern day Athens is a place over 3,000 years in the making. Athens is one of the most thriving and dynamic major cities in Europe. It is the heart and capital of Greece. As rich as it is in history, having its start in prehistoric times, it is becoming as rich today among the economy, the industries, political power and cultural life. Since switching from the Greek Drachma to the Euro in 2001, Athens found itself moving up to become the 32nd richest city in the world.
Once home to the likes of Plato, Aristotle and Socrates, Athens today harbors almost 4 million people. Still, the days of ancient history play a vital role in Athenian culture. With the Parthenon on the Acropolis, The Greek Parliament, and Athens Academy and University in plain view, it’s impossible to ignore. There are also numerous museums and their papers constantly promote new exhibits and showings, especially at the world famous Archaeological, Military, and Byzantine Museums.
By day, there are many place to see in this huge city. Many like to enjoy a long meal at one of the many taverns. There is also shopping in the Kolonaki, a prestigious area full of boutiques, bars, art galleries and museums. It can also be the place for an exciting nightlife, which is said to rival that of even places such as New York City or London. The streets of Athens light up and so are the waters dotted like stars from the many yachts filling up the ports of Piraeus and Zea. Special to Athens is the "rebetadikas", or Rebetikos, which are live music restaurants, compacted namely in the Psirri area of Athens. It's the place to sing, dance and drink with a classic Opa! style right till dawn. Day and night, the capital of Greece welcomes tourists and businesses alike.
